Scott-Atwater
Scott-Atwater was one of the most innovative outboard manufacturers of the mid-20th century, famous for its 'Bail-a-Matic' system which automatically pumped water out of the boat's bilge while the engine was running.
This distinctive feature solved a major pain point for boaters and remains one of the most unique engineering integrated solutions in marine history. Scott-Atwater engines were also known for being among the first to offer full gear shifts (Forward-Neutral-Reverse) on smaller portable models. Their engineering philosophy focused on family-friendly features and ease of use, helping to fuel the American boating boom of the 1950s. The brand was eventually acquired by McCulloch, but its influence on safety and convenience features can still be seen in modern outboard designs. Today, Scott-Atwater engines are prized by members of the Antique Outboard Motor Club for their historical significance and ingenious mechanical systems.
